The It Bed by Sleep Number

Las Vegas – Smart bed company Sleep Number has unveiled a new mattress, the It Bed, which makes suggestions on how to rest more effectively.

  • Smart bed concept is aimed at Millennials who are looking to optimise their sleep
  • The innovation uses an application programming interface (API) to connect with other apps, drawing holistic data on its user’s lifestyle to make recommendations for better sleep

The mattress uses a SleepIQ system featuring a range of sensors to gauge how well its user is sleeping. The It Bed builds on this principle, and features what Sleep Number calls ActiveComfort. This enables the bed to intuitively adapt to how users sleep, evaluating whether they sleep better with a firm or a soft mattress.

The feature that gives the mattress the most potential is its API, which means that the It Bed is able to synchronise with other apps. The It Bed will be able to link up with users’ calendars, for example, and tell them to go to bed at a specific time if there is an important meeting to attend in the morning, or make suggestions such as laying off caffeine in the afternoon to ensure a better sleep. The It Bed will be be rolled out this summer, priced from £685 ($1,000, €920).

The Big Picture

In line with our macrotrend The Optimised Self, the It Bed is designed to appeal to consumers who are aiming to perform at their highest. Brands that arm their customers with the ability to thrive in the Turbulent Teens will win their loyalty.
