Only dreamers

24 : 06 : 2015 Art Basel : Do We Dream Under The Same Sky : Rirkrit Tiravanija

Basel – Visitors to Art Basel 2015 can enjoy a sensory retreat at artist Rirkrit Tiravanija’s culinary workshop.

  • Communal dining and meeting area where guests can escape the clamour of the art festival
  • Food and drink available in exchange for donations or gestures such as serving others or helping to prepare food

A collaborative project with German architects Nikolaus Hirsch/Michel Müller and Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi, Do We dream Under The Same Sky invites guests at their 2015 art show to roll up their sleeves and cook a dish made from home-grown Thai ingredients.

The structure, which shelters the communal space – a modular bamboo and steel pavilion – will be shipped to northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai at the end of Art Basel, where it will serve as a space for workshops and seminars at Tiravanija’s The Land Foundation, a self-sustaining living retreat for the artistic community.

‘As a platform, we are interested in addressing ideas of architecture and food – including the chain of supply to the recipes and the socio-economic impact – as well as some dichotomies between private and public, property and non-property, and artistic practices,’ Tiravanija told BlouinArtInfo.

The Big Picture: Future food experiences are as much about preserving and enhancing Conviviality Culture as they are about introducing new forms of technology to the consumer. Find out more in our upcoming Food and Drinks Futures 2015 report by reserving your copy here.
