Minimalist makeover: Passport redesign to celebrate the Norwegian landscape

Norway – Design studio Neue is to redesign the Norwegian passport with a focus on the country’s celebrated landscape.

The new passport will feature minimalist representations of Norway’s famous fjords and mountains, and will come in a choice of three colours: white, red and turquoise. What is more, when under UV light, the front end paper of the passport will be transformed to show the Northern Lights and a lone star shimmering over the mountain peaks.

‘Nature has always been an essential part of the Norwegian identity and tradition, as well as being fundamental for our welfare,’ said Neue in a statement. ‘The landscape, with its vast variation from the south to the north, is the starting point for the design concept.’

The proposed redesign is part of an overhaul of Norway’s national documents, along with Norges Bank’s new pixellated designs for the Norwegian kroner.

The planned Norwegian rebranding is an example of LS:N Global’s Town Rebranding microtrend, but on a larger scale, as countries look to design tools developed in the private sector to celebrate their national character with a visual identity.
