Audio wave: Soundscape delves into the Mississippi

New Orleans – When you think of New Orleans, you think beignets and Bourbon Street; debauchery and Mardi Gras. It is easy to forget that it sits along the banks of the widest river in the US – the Mississippi.

As part of her solo exhibition Vigor, and the result of a month-long residency at the May gallery in New Orleans, Dutch artist Lotte Geeven created a soundscape inspired by the mighty river.

The multimedia installation, entitled The River, invites visitors into a room where an audio recording of a book compiled by Geeven is emitted through speakers. The book is based on ‘stolen pages’ says Geeven, tracts of texts from a variety of different poems all waxing lyrically about the river. Like the Mississippi, the book travels through its muddy riverbanks, okra fields and plantations, immersing listeners in its world.

LS:N Global has noted that designers are testing out new ways of using media to express literature. For a piece of work on a similar theme, see our Seed on The Echo Project.
