Badge of honour: Katrantzou adds uniform style

26 : 02 : 2014 Badge : Catwalk : Military

London – Those who expected to see the digital prints for which Mary Katrantzou is known waltzing down the catwalk at London Fashion Week may have been surprised by her non-digital autumn/winter 2014 show. Instead, the designer presented a collection featuring crocheted and embroidered emblems that seemed more suited to a Girl Guide than a fashionista.

Katrantzou was inspired by the codes and values of uniforms, and included a diverse range of military insignia, scout badges and road signs. The brocades and jacquard badges, which were woven together to make intricate dresses, offered a hint of the outdoor symbolism identified in our Adventurism design direction.

Designers have increasingly found inspiration in signs and symbols, and the mystique that they hold. For more, read our Emblematic design direction.
