Melbourne – Australian designer and curator Sarah K is behind Melbourne’s latest event space and limited-edition retail experience Urban Larder.
Conceived for the launch of designEX, Australia’s longest-running design and architecture festival, Urban Larder is a handmade greenhouse structure located within a three-storey Melbourne building. It hosted an all-locally-sourced tasting event that gave way to a pop-up shop showcasing handmade clothing, furniture and homeware. The structure will finish its life as a space for growing plants.
Urban Larder has sustainability at its heart. Many products are made from recycled materials, and the project as a whole was carefully crafted to eliminate material waste. All food stock was sourced from within the Melbourne city radius.
As urban designers balance overcrowding and environmental issues with innovation, solutions often lie in reutilising existing structures and cultivating symbiotic spaces where products and design embrace sustainability and localism. For more, read our Symbiotic Branding macro trend.
