Venice Architecture Biennale 2016: Feast for the eyes

31 : 05 : 2016 MVRDV : Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 : Kitchen

Venice – A transparent concept kitchen by Dutch architects MVRDV celebrates food and encourages cleanliness.

  • The design makes food the main visual element of the Infinity Kitchen
  • The only parts of the kitchen that are not transparent are the third-party appliances

Each element of the concept kitchen, save for the third-party appliances including the hob, refrigerator and dishwasher, is made from glass.

The novel design enables cooks to instantly see what ingredients are available without the need to search for them. It also reveals previously unforeseen areas where dirt can build up, meaning that it is much easier to spot if the kitchen has been thoroughly cleaned.

‘If we imagine that everything is transparent clear and clean, doesn’t it mean that the only thing that is colourful and visible is our food?’ asks MVRDV co-founder Winy Maas, in a promotional video. ‘Doesn’t it then imply that we are encouraged to love the food, in that way, and that maybe it even becomes more healthy, if not sexy?’

The Big Picture

Young, convenience-obsessed foodies are increasingly dining out rather than staying in. Companies such as MVRDV and AEG are looking at new ways to get them back into the home kitchen.
