Stockholm Furniture Fair 2016: Passages of time

17 : 02 : 2016 Thom Fougere : Stockholm Furniture Fair : Localism

Stockholm – Winnipeg-based Thom Fougere Studio presented a collection of homewares and furniture inspired by Canada.

  • The pieces are made from local materials such as Tyndall limestone from Manitoba
  • ‘Canadian design shares a certain sentiment with Scandinavia’ – Thom Fougere

Fougere, former creative director of Canadian design house EQ3, founded his eponymous studio in 2015. The designer’s strong interest in history and materiality informed his use of high-low materials, such as Tyndall limestone – a porous variety commonly used in building cladding across Canada and the US.

The collection features a wooden bar cart made from solid ash, a set of fireplace accessories for Canadian furniture store Mjölk and a flexible leather saddle chair.

The materials were chosen partly for their longevity and dynamic visual properties. Over time, the saddle chair will develop an attractive patina and the untreated Tyndall limestone will gradually weather to expose fragments of fossils.

The Big Picture

Designers that draw on local nuances to inform interiors and architecture are examined in more detail in our Crafted Locale design direction. For more updates on Stockholm Design Week 2016, look out for our forthcoming show review and design direction.
