Sweet combination: Shop and bar bring together dessert and wine

13 : 08 : 2014 Tsumons : Wine & Sweet Shop : Japan

Japan – Local patisserie chef and sommelier Ms Katsuki has opened Tsumons, her first wine and sweets shop and bar, in Fukuoka.

Not only will the store combine the two specialities of Ms Katsuki, it will also introduce Western culinary habits to Eastern diners.

To us in the West, a wine and sweets shop might not sound unusual as the combination is a familiar after-dinner experience. But it is more of a novelty in Japan, where coffee is normally taken after a meal.

The store was designed by Japanese architects Case-Real. The design is simple, with clean lines and a utilitarian feel. A large glass square front reveals a single wooden table that runs the length of the narrow, understated restaurant. Bottles of wine line the walls on wooden shelves, while pastries are placed sparsely in glass cabinets, like little jewels waiting to be chosen.

The stark contrast between wood and concrete belies a restaurant offering an indulgent mix of fine wines and sweet treats.

Tsumons is part of a growing trend of offering sugary food in refined, high-designed spaces. For more examples, read our Sweet Tooth Hospitality microtrend.
