London – Digital artist Lucy Hardcastle has created an organically shaped touchscreen that offers a multisensory tactile experience.

Qualia challenges the unimaginative nature of the current technological experience and proposes a more engaging, multidimensional alternative. The curved surface of the glass screen responds to pressure with abstract generative visuals that are reminiscent of natural phenomena such as running water and smoke, enhancing the tactile experience.

‘People often tell me that my digital work makes them want to lick the screen. I wanted to recreate this sensory impression in a physical environment,’ says Hardcastle. The striking quality of the interaction stems from the combination of an ornate glass surface and the integration of sophisticated digital technologies such as projection-mapping, infrared cameras and responsive rendering software.

The project was inspired by Hardcastle’s belief that technological experiences will need to become richer in the future in order to promote cognitive development. ‘I wanted to question whether we can generate tacit knowledge from a screen and how the use of flat interfaces will affect future generations,’ she explains.
