Washington DC – When non-profit-making organisation the Center for Strategic & International Studies decided to install a new chandelier in its foyer it wanted more than a hanging light, it wanted a chandelier that represented its work as a bipartisan think tank.
The centre asked art and technology studio Sosolimited to create a unique chandelier made out of 425 bulbs, which form a map of the world when viewed from below. Each light is linked to different data points, such as GDP growth rate, renewable water resources and energy consumption, and creates different patterns as the live data changes. Each pattern is representative of the data it reflects – the lights simulate raindrops for water, and pulses for energy consumption.
The visualisation of global political data imbues the chandelier with beauty and grace. It illustrates our Kinetic Nature design direction, which explores how designers are taking inspiration from nature to create kinetic, technological pieces of art.
