Step up: Endless Stair at London Design Festival

10 : 09 : 2013 London : Art : London Design Festival

London – The landmark project for this year’s London Design Festival will be a sculpture, Endless Stair, that is reminiscent of Escher’s never-ending stairs.

The temporary installation will be constructed in front of the Tate Modern. In line with the festival’s theme this year, Design is Everywhere, the sculpture will be open to the public to climb on and interact with. At its peak, the highest step is 7.7m above the ground, giving visitors a new view of the Thames and the Tate Modern.

The structure was designed by dRMM, in conjunction with Arup engineers and the American Hardwood Export Council, and is made from American tulipwood cross-laminated timber. The choice of material was designed to show the structural potential of such an abundant American timber.

For more on the London Design Festival, watch our Inform with deputy director Max Fraser and look out for our coverage of the event, which takes place on 14–22 September.
