DIY living: Turn your washing machine into a chair

29 : 07 : 2013 Furniture : Electrical Goods : Household Appliance

Israel – Belarus-born, Jerusalem-based industrial designer Tony Grigorian (aka Antonina) has created a series of lounge chairs made from parts of a disassembled washing machine.

The I Used To Be A Washing Machine project reconfigures an ordinary appliance into another household object with a more eye-catching design. One washing machine yields three chair designs that look completely removed from their material source. Each uses different parts of the machine to create starkly modern seats.

Structural and compact, Grigorian’s designs re-appriopriate the innards of the machine to create stools and armchairs that are sculptures as well as seats. The collection includes a manual guide to the DIY hack for home-dwellers to create their own washing machine chairs.

Repurposing an appliance in this way is an example of our Hacked Home microtrend, which explores how more families are modifying elements of their home to create a customised domestic space.
