New York – For New York Design Week, designers Frederick McSwain and François Chambard debuted Off the Grid, an installation of high-end furniture and lighting inspired by camping equipment.
The installation at Gallery R’Pure included outdoor seating and storage inspired by milk crates, a lighthearted civilian take on military travel trunks and racks, and braziers which, instead of fire, contain a grid of Maglite torches that the designers compare to ‘mechanical flames or some kind of electric bouquets’.
The bold colours and playful shapes of Off the Grid reflect our Adventurism design direction. But a series of Craft System lamps suggests serious survivalist inspiration for the collection as well. ‘This year’s series is a literal interpretation of the Off the Grid idea through lamps that work without being plugged in,’ the designers said in a statement. Instead, the post-Hurricane Sandy collection is lit using battery-powered LEDs, hurricane candles or kerosene. For more on how designers are applying similar ideas, see our Adventurism Toolkit.
