Milan – The city’s La Rinascente department store will present Afrofuture, a space dedicated to showcasing Africa’s new wave of technology and design talent, at Milan Design Week 2013.
Brands are becoming interested in consumers in emerging continents such as Africa, who are starting to earn more, are gaining access to credit and are increasingly able to spend money on non-essential items, as discussed in our New Emerging Affluents.
Afrofuture, curated by Beatrice Galilee, will feature events, performances and different media, bringing together some of Africa’s forward thinkers. It demonstrates how countries in Africa are emerging as important voices in the realms of technology and design.
It will include Afrofuture Windows, a multi dimensional story portal showing six stories from African pulp fiction; a ‘sweatshop’, where visitors can create their own sci-fi zine; a live mobile phone musical performance, and global speakers who will discuss technology, architecture and politics.
Afrofuture will run from 9-14 April.
