Texas – Nike sportswear has continued its extraterrestrial design direction with its new Nike Basketball collection.
Developed at Nike’s fictitious, top secret Area 72 testing facility in Houston, Texas, the range includes the Nike Blazer Mid, Nike Vandal, Nike Lunar Force 1, Nike Barkley Posite Max and Nike Air Force Max 2013.
The shoes mix the old model of the Nike Raygun character on the tongue and customised galaxy prints on the shoes with new innovations such as reflective, glow-in-the-dark highlights and a range of textures that create a sense of a galactic, outer space environment.
This secret collection will be available from 14 February 2013 in limited quantities in selected stores.
The use of space and science in product design is a growing trend. For more, see our Re-enlightenment Rising presentation at our forthcoming Trend Briefing. For another compelling example of a space-inspired sports range, read our Tom Sachs NikeCraft Innovate feature.
