Switzerland – Designers Aurélie Mathieu and Philippe Karrer have created Crystal Brick, a radical re-interpretation of the classic Baccarat vase.
The designers sliced the vase into segments and then created sticks out of various materials in vibrant colours, including blue labradorite, granite, Carrare marble and painted aluminium.
Perhaps inspired by the playful connotations of the main meaning of ‘baccarat’, which is a card game, Mathieu and Karrer encourage people to build the stack layer by layer, alternating crystal layers with the sticks. The result looks like a luxury version of the block-stacking game Jenga. The designers also cite the irreverent furniture designs of the Memphis Group as a source of inspiration.
The literal deconstruction of a luxury item, as well as the marble paired side by side with more humble materials such as aluminium, place these objects within the Geo Luxe design direction we saw at the Milan Furniture Fair 2012.
