Yokosuka – A new building development in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, deconstructs the layout of a typical house or guest lodging and distributes its various components across a grassland site.
The project, Calling a Plan a Map, is the work of Yokohama design firm On Design. Rather than build a single structure on the plot surrounded by grassland, the designers chose to maximise the available space by spreading out small bedroom units around the area. A permanent kitchen and living room building anchor the site, while all other structures are temporary and can be re-arranged if desired.
With impressive views of Mount Fuji and the picturesque island of Enoshima, the site is a peaceful refuge for urbanites, who can enjoy their own detached private quarters while congregating in a central hub.
This travel lodge design is a well-executed way to target single-person households. For more on this trend, read our Singles Rising market report.
