Yoi story: Asian street food comes to Stockholm

12 : 12 : 2012 Furniture : Yoi : Lomar Arkitekter

Stockholm – A new pan-Asian restaurant in Sweden captures the look and feel of a street food stall, as interpreted by local design firm Lomar Arkitekter.

The Yoi restaurant features rough-hewn materials such as cement, plywood and corrugated metal that recall the improvised look of many Asian markets, but avoid clichéd signifiers such as bamboo. Asian street sounds played in the toilets add to the fast-paced mood.

Furniture was custom-designed for the space and inspired by outdoor street stalls. Yoi project manager Yvonne Fung tells LS:N Global that the overall design was informed by photos from the clients’ study trip to Japan, with the goal of achieving ‘a mixture of playfulness, rawness, comfort and functionality’. Strategic designers JVD reproduced some of the photos for bold wall graphics.
