Tokyo – The Barcode Room by design partnership studio_01, has won a competition for a studio apartment that also functions as a social space.
The Barcode Room features moving walls that slide along ceiling rails to adapt the space for various uses. The walls include fold-out tables, shelves, cupboards, stools and a sofabed. Unfolding the various components also creates windows between different spaces in the home. When not in use, the items are stored in the walls to create more room for guests.
Designers Akinori Hamada and Alex Knezo want to take the Barcode concept even further in the future. ‘By developing a larger variety of components to be embedded into the walls, the bars could be used in a range of spaces including offices, galleries, stores and restaurants,’ say the designers.
