Rough and ready: Danish design at Maison&Objet

12 : 09 : 2012 Design : Craftsmen : Hand-made

Paris – Danish Crafts’ new collection CC16, featuring hand-made objects created using revivalist techniques, was on show at the Maison&Objet interior design fair this month.

London-based Danish designer Nina Tolstrup curated the collection. Objects included Fictile 12.1, a set of rough-hewn clay breakfast bowls with glazed inner surfaces by Anne Tophøj, and Tree Vase, a series of vases derived from the shapes of real tree branches by Jane Holmberg Andersen. Design studio R7B Copenhagen created Crafted Urns, vessels glazed in deep forest green and midnight black.

Kristian Kastoft, head of projects and communications at Danish Crafts, said some of the urns were created from moulds found in a disused factory, just one example of how heritage informs the collection. ‘Danish design has a long-standing tradition for the hand-made,’ he tells LS:N Global. ‘We are here to professionalise the craftsman.’
