Off the grid: Eco-home is a natural alternative

Tokyo – In the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami, brands and designers in Japan have been re-assessing their relationships with technology. In a bid to encourage a less technology-reliant lifestyle, Tokyo-based advertising agency TBWA/Hakuhodo created a 100% off-the-grid home.

The portable wooden home, called Mirai Nihon, was designed in collaboration with more than 20 other companies including Nissan and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Features of the Mirai Nihon home include a water purification system, an online energy management system and pan charger, all powered by Nissan’s electric car LEAF, which acts as a generator.

Mirai Nihon is not only a great alternative form of accommodation for people living in disaster zones, it also appeals to environmentally conscious homeowners who want a lifestyle that is not reliant on local infrastructure.
