Retro office fit: Menswear store pops up out of the fifties

Melbourne – A pop-up store for menswear label James Cameron has opened, with a subtle retro elegance fit for the Mad Men of the 50s.

Inspired by the work of German photographer Thomas Demand – famous for meticulously fabricating the three-dimensional interiors he shoots – the temporary store located in the buzzy Fitzroy district has a distinctly stern look with its toned-down palette and walls lined with grey document archive boxes forming a brick-like pattern. Furniture in the store includes BarberOsgerby’s ‘Tab’ lamp for Flos, and Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec’s ‘Steelwood’ chair for Magis.

As we predicted, the popularity of pared-down interiors and apparel has risen throughout the recession, as consumers take a professional and understated approach to their shopping habits and clothing choices. Since the Pitti Uomo show last year, we’ve seen a distinct throwback to mid-century professionalism and suiting in menswear – let’s hope office culture gets some inspiration from Sterling Cooper, too.
