New York – Creative collective WeMakeCoolSh.it created a mobile pirate wifi intranet on New York’s L Train subway throughout one week in November.
For the project, named the L Train Notwork, members of the agency rode on the train carrying servers, routers and the necessary technology to create a temporary localised intranet.
Specially produced content was made available to anyone travelling on the train and was tailored to the ‘creative class’, who use the line between areas such as Williamsburg and the East Village. Programmes included the Missed Connections dating chat room and original curated content from local authors, poets and visual artists.
‘We like to encourage strangers to talk to each other and this seemed like a great way to do it,’ explains founder Matthew McGregor-Mento. ‘This is only the first of many Notworks. We plan on taking the idea and applying it to art projects, social good and marketing.’
