Eindhoven, Netherlands – As part of Dutch Design Week, electronics manufacturer Philips is presenting a series of design concepts examining sustainability and waste management in the home.
One proposal is the Microbial Home, a project that makes constructive use of household waste. Centred around the biodigester kitchen island, the design converts bathroom and kitchen waste into methane gas before using it to power other devices around the home.
The Larder concept is a food storage system that uses natural processes to prolong the life of fresh produce. Terracotta compartments in the centre of a reclaimed wooden table cool food, while a ceramic garden hangs above, enabling the user to grow and store vegetables.
‘We need to push ourselves to rethink domestic appliances entirely, how homes consume energy and how communities can pool resources,’ says Clive van Heerden, senior director of design-led innovation at Philips Design.
