New order: Miller acts in an orderly fashion

‘In order to live, man must act. In order to act, he must make choices. In order to make choices, he must define a code of values. He must know what he is and where he is.’
Ayn Rand, novelist and philosopher

So began Matthew Miller’s notes for his spring/summer 2012 show as part of Fashion East during London fashion week.

In an attempt to streamline the design process, Miller used open-source software and printed shirt patterns directly on to fabric. ‘I also built the hardware and used specific cottons with blends of pu and Kevlar to improve garments’ overall endurance,’ he tells LS:N Global. Technical performance details included backpack straps, scuba-style shoes and safety hardware accessories that were also worked in to the looks.

Miller references the idea of the Randian hero, the character he had in mind when designing, a man who makes decisions about how to improve his life and then acts on them.

LS:N Global will explore the idea of Kaizenomics as part of the Personal Information Economy section of our Autumn Trend Briefing.
