Munich – Industrial designer Florian Schmid has created Stitching Concrete, a series of stools that play on the visual illusion that the fabric used is not strong enough to sit on.
The stools are made from a flexible material impregnated with cement that can be manipulated when wet before it hardens to form a thin, fireproof concrete layer. The edges are then stitched together with brightly coloured threads and dried for 24 hours on a wooden mould.
‘The material combines the softness of the cloth and the stability of the cold concrete, but the finished surface gives it a soft appearance,’ says Schmid.
The new manufacturing process shows how concrete can be used in a completely new way. As LS:N Global previously reported, brands continually need to innovate to succeed in an Anarconomy Decade.
