Well comfortable: Ward gets creative treatment

19 : 07 : 2011 Birmingham : Designer Pharmacies : Two Create

Birmingham – UK design studio Two Create has redesigned a ward in the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham in the style of a boutique hotel.

The Teenage Cancer Trust hired Two Create to produce a space for 12 teenage cancer patients. The designers worked with nurses to imagine what the interior of a cancer ward could look like, and how the space could be used.

‘We created social spaces, so as soon as the patients are well enough to get out of bed, they want to do so. There is also a kitchen area, which is mostly used by parents, but which enables them to mix and share with each other,’ says Lucy Snowdowne, co-founder of Two Create.

‘By using different chandeliers and blinds, we made sure the light is not too piercing. After cancer treatment your skin is very sensitive, so we used soft fabrics such as suede on the furniture.’

The space includes iPod docks, designer furniture from SCP, and an end table designed to help patients carry IVs.

This is a great example of how an interior can give people a greater sense of wellbeing. Look out for our toolkit on how to use architecture and design to enhance quality of life.
