Against the grain: New furniture is old news
Eindhoven – Dutch design firm Vij5 has released a collection of furniture that uses a material formed from old newspapers. Newspaper Wood resembles wood, it is grained when cut and can be sanded down to a smooth surface.

Once wood is turned into paper it stays as paper. But Mieke Meijer, inventor of Newspaper Wood, decided to play with the process. ‘I thought it would be nice to turn the process around and turn paper into wood again.’
