Traditional update: Yii products reflect Taiwan’s Street Life

Milan – At Taiwanese brand Yii’s presentation at this year’s Milan design fair, local and international designers are aiming to express the country’s traditional culture through contemporary design.

Hence in the exhibition, called Street Life, local Taiwanese materials such as bamboo and porcelain feature heavily.

Shapes of the Scent, created by Taiwanese designer Chung-tong Ho and a traditional incense manufacturer, is a sculptural product that aims to enhance the consumer’s life. ‘I want people to go home and be reminded to relax,’ Ho tells LS:N Global. ‘The time the incense is lit to the finishing time is four hours – about the time you need to unwind after work.’

The porcelain of Chinese designer Ching-ting Hsu’s Lace Bowls looks just like lace: it looks visually very light and soft, but has an unexpectedly tough tactility.

LS:N Global will report on more of the Street Life collection in our comprehensive Milan report, on sale next week.
