London – German industrial design student Hannes Harms has created a flat-pack cardboard seat that is designed to be assembled using expanding foam.
Called Scum Chair, it is supplied as a perforated pattern on a single sheet of cardboard which, when detached, can be folded into shape and bonded using the foam. ‘Aesthetically, the organised folding structure creates an interesting contrast to the expanding foam and questions the idea of usability and ‘anti-design’,’ says Harms.
The Scum Chair is a great example of the emerging DIY economy and punk-onomic approach to design, as outlined in our DIY feature.
