What a waste: Show explores greener fabrics

London – A new exhibition at the Science Museum highlights how technology can help to reduce throwaway fashion.

‘Trash Fashion: Designing out waste’ will showcase a range of garments that reduce waste and the impact on the environment. These include 3D body scanning technology to create perfectly fitting knitwear, a jacket grown by bacteria that live on green tea, and stitch-free clothes that are cut, joined and patterned using laser technology.

LS:N Global recently spoke to one of the exhibitors, Suzanne Lee, who is growing garments out of bacteria.

‘The big brands, the luxury goods groups, say they are trying to address a sustainable agenda, but I think there is a great deal of lip service paid and not a lot of action.’

For more information on an alternative way of producing textiles, read our recent Inform.

The exhibition will run at the Wellcome Wing at the Science Museum, London, from June 2010 until February 2011.
