London – The human body was the inspiration for fashion design students graduating from Nottingham Trent University, whose collections were shown at this year’s Graduate Fashion Week.

‘It’s a collection inspired by skin, the body’s largest organ that is composed of cell layers, nerves and glands. Our skin protects us and connects us to the outside world,’ said Phoebe Thirlwall, who showed fine knitwear pieces with intricate dart detailing in a nude colour palette.

‘My collection is called Internal Impairment and refers to the hereditary medical condition, polycystic kidney disease. I wanted to try to explain the internal exploration and available treatment, both of which I find fascinating. Everyone should consider organ donation,’ said Emma Philpot who focused on large open-weave crochet and bulbous swirl designs in a spectrum of greys and reds.

‘The knitwear students at Nottingham Trent University were outstanding this year – ones to watch include Emma Philpot, Phoebe Thirlwall, Claire Hartley and Samantha Brooke, ‘ said Katie Dominie, founder of GFW affiliate website Arts Thread, which showcases portfolios of graduating design students.

LS:N Global will report further on GFW highlights with an overview next week.
