Communal thinking

06 : 01 : 2017 One Shared House : Irene Pereyra : Communal Living

Amsterdam – Designer Irene Pereyra has created a documentary and survey that examines communal living.

  • The project gives an in-depth insight into perceptions of and attitudes towards communal living
  • Early results from the survey suggest that Puerto Ricans and people aged 60 and over are the demographics that are most willing to share with others

For One Shared House, the New York-based designer returned to her childhood home in Amsterdam. Built by eight women who also lived in the space, the communal house was designed as an alternative to expensive, single-family apartments and featured shared eating, washing and sleeping areas.

The documentary is accompanied by a survey that invites viewers to select the things that they would be most willing to share in their living environment. The results are presented on completion of the survey and offer insight into current perceptions of and attitudes towards communal living.

Early results from the survey suggest that people are most willing to share their internet and garden, and least willing to share their toilets and showers.

The Big Picture

Increased urbanisation is driving a shift in what people are willing to share in their living spaces. Read our Activate on The Collective: Old Oak, one of the world’s largest co-living spaces, to find out more.
