Art across Africa

30 : 09 : 2016 Southern Guild : Dokter And Misses : Whatiftheworld

Johannesburg – Southern Guild has opened a new location that brings together works by artists and designers from across Africa.

  • The new gallery is a partnership between Southern Guild and contemporary art gallery Whatiftheworld
  • The two galleries will draw on their collective pool of around 50 artists

Southern Guild Johannesburg brings together a comprehensive collection of contemporary art and design pieces from across Africa, from Burkina Faso to Senegal.

The gallery is the second Southern Guild location after Cape Town, and presents a mix of established and up-and-coming designers, artists, architects and jewellery-makers.

Highlights include work by husband-and-wife team Dokter and Misses, who are renowned in South Africa for their clean, modernist designs, and work by artist Justine Mahoney, whose solo exhibition Tainted will open at the gallery in October 2016.

‘This opportunity to combine our voices, to explore the intersection of art and design, promises results greater than the sum of our parts,’ says Trevyn McGowan, co-founder of Southern Guild.

The Big Picture

Southern Guild is bringing together the best African talent to highlight the breadth and depth of the continent’s contemporary art and design scenes. For more on Southern Guild see our Design Miami/ 2015 show review.
