LDF 2016: Wine redefined

19 : 09 : 2016 Above Sea Level : Drink Futures : LDF 2016

London – A new zine launched at this year’s festival takes a radical approach to wine journalism.

  • Above Sea Level uses unpretentious language to break down the barriers around wine appreciation
  • It features a broad range of content, from photo essays to opinion pieces

Founded by entrepreneur Aimee Hartley, Above Sea Level aims to create a new dialogue around wine to examine its relationship with food, lifestyle, culture, design, people and destinations, and encourage the kind of universal connoisseurship that food now commands.

The first issue, which focuses on California, examines how memories, language and materials used in the production of wine shape the finished product. Photo essays take centre stage in the zine to make the subject matter more accessible to budding sommeliers.

‘I became interested in the idea of how I could make wine relevant for a young audience in a really authentic way but without always just talking about what a wine tastes like,’ Hartley tells LS:N Global. ‘I thought surely there are more creative ways that we can be getting people interested in wine by giving it more context.’
