US – FarmBot is a farming platform that enables users to cultivate plants remotely.

  • Users design their farm by dragging and dropping images of plants onto a grid map
  • The FarmBot Genesis device manages the growth of plant life with machine precision and is completely open source

The FarmBot Genesis sows seeds, waters plants and removes weeds automatically. An accompanying mobile app enables users to check on their crops through the device’s built-in camera and access key information such as soil moisture content and temperature.

The sturdy, waterproof hardware is designed to perform in all weather conditions and can be hooked up to a solar panel and rain collector. A single FarmBot device can grow enough vegetables to satisfy one person’s needs for an entire year, according to the company website.

The Big Picture

As LS:N Global predicted in our Future Family macrotrend, tough economic conditions and a greater awareness of the environmental impact of consumerism are driving households to grow their own food. Ikea has launched its own home hydroponics kit to enable urban families to get hands on with horticulture.
