Monolithic marvel

19 : 02 : 2016 Vienna : Monolith : Eco-friendly

Vienna – Art and design studio Process has created a generative art piece that conveys the amount of energy used by the building in which it appears.

  • Monolith uses an algorithm to translate data on energy consumption and production into visuals
  • The piece is on display in the entrance hall of an energy-efficient skyscraper on the Donaukanal riverfront

Commissioned by checkpointmedia for Raiffeisenhaus Wien GesbR, the installation takes data on cooling, heating, photovoltaic energy and electricity consumption generated by sensors placed throughout the building and runs it through a series of algorithms to generate dynamic visuals.

The piece responds in different ways according to the amount of energy consumed, with night and day, and winter and summer, producing wildly different results.
