Shopping at the car wash

17 : 09 : 2015 Selfridges : Anya Hindmarch : Car Wash

London – Designer Anya Hindmarch has created a subterranean fashion highway pop-up shop at Selfridges.

  • The installation takes its cues from Hindmarch’s latest collection featuring motorway motifs
  • ‘I wanted to take the creativity of London Fashion Week to our customers in a fun and unexpected way’ – Anya Hindmarch

Celebrating the launch of the her M25-inspired autumn/winter collection, the designer has transformed the store’s 16,000-square-feet car park into a stylish car wash and petrol station.

Visitors are guided by glossy chevrons through a hot car wash photo booth, where they can have their picture taken next to a gleaming Rolls-Royce and male model mechanics, where beating hearts are kept in check by a looming speed camera.

Weary shoppers can then take respite at the Anya Hindmarch Service Station, fully stocked with everything the fashion-conscious motorist might need, including fluffy dice, air fresheners, trucker hats and embroidered high-visibility jackets. Snacks are also provided by Little Chef.

The Big Picture: In true Iconoclash style, Hindmarch has fetishised popular culture in the work of revered typographer and graphic designer Margaret Calvert, the woman responsible for redesigning Britain’s road signs.
