Digital doodler

27 : 08 : 2015 Orée : Stylograph : Drawing

France – Artisanal technology company Orée has created a ballpoint pen that can digitally record notes and sketches.

  • The Orée Stylograph enables ardent doodlers to turn their scribbles into digital documents
  • Will be launched at next month’s Maison&Objet trade fair in Paris

The Stylograph is accompanied by a sleek leather notebook comprising 192 pages of purpose-made A5 paper that helps the pen’s built-in micro-camera to track the movement of the nib. The device stores all notes and sketches made on the paper in its internal memory, ready to be transferred to the accompanying iOS or Android app where they can be edited or shared.

‘Every idea matters, from the most personal to the most radical, so the tools that capture them shouldn’t stand in the way,’ says Orée. ‘Yet modern tools, for all their sophistication, do stand in the way and none beat the simplicity of pen and paper.’

In true Orée style, the technology at work is trumped by the quality of the design. The matte body of the pen is hand-shaped from pure copper and features a tapered triangular grip and wood-tipped cap.

The Big Picture: Inspired by designers such as Jonathan Ive and Dieter Rams, technology designers are adopting minimal design cues that cut through visual clutter and noise. Read our Fem Tech design direction for more.
