Make-up monument

27 : 05 : 2015 Venice Biennale 2015 : Shigeru Ban : Shiseido

Venice Biennale 2015 – Architect Shigeru Ban has created a pavilion made from thousands of make-up cases.

  • The main surface of the pavilion is covered in empty make-up palettes, creating a tiled effect
  • A pool of water has been added to provide additional lighting effects inside

Reverberation – Pavilion of Light and Sound features a free-standing parabola made from more than 90,000 empty eyeshadow containers to form a sweeping curve. The structure dissects Palazzo Pisani square, uniting old and new by using an existing wall of the 17th-century architecture for support. Designed for cosmetics brand Shiseido, the installation is part of a promotional campaign for the latest collection in the Clé de Peau Beauté range, which Shiseido has called Lights of Venice.

Standing underneath the structure, the dark blue cases, stuck to either side of an acrylic support, create a mosaic that reflects the sunlight in a way that is ‘characteristic of Venice’, explains Ban.
