DIY futures: User adds final stamp to furniture collection

London – A new furniture collection lets users add a final, individual stamp to products by putting together joints and customised wood panels.

Indie Furniture by Swiss designer Nicola Enrico Stäubli of Nicole From Bern is created with the help of an online planning aid that also provides a list of materials. It is currently being showcased in the Sustainable Futures exhibition at the Design Museum in London.

The bespoke storage system on display at the exhibition consists of universal furniture joints, used to connect salvaged or recycled timber cut to size by the user. The wood itself can be sourced from a carpenter or a do-it-yourself store.

Eco-wise the system ticks all the boxes; timber is upcycled, units are easily reconfigured and reused, while shipping only the joints reduces the product’s carbon footprint. The design also positions the user as co-designer: a sure way to encourage the consumer to cherish their shelves forever. For more on new home systems, read LS:N Global’s Homestead 3.0 trend report.
