Standing room only: A workspace concept with no place to sit

04 : 12 : 2014 Future Of The Workplace : Standing Desk : Amsterdam

Amsterdam – Experimental visual art and architecture studio RAAAF and visual artist Barbara Visser have envisaged an office environment with nowhere to sit in their new art installation at art space Looiersgracht 60.

The art installation, aptly called The End of Sitting, creates an experimental workspace in which sitting is barely an option. The space is made up of large 3D objects of varied angles and shapes. In this office, workers can stand, lean or even lay on the structures, rather than sit.

‘In our society almost the entirety of our surroundings have been designed for sitting, while evidence from medical research suggests that too much sitting has adverse health effects,’ says RAAAF on its project page. ‘[We] have developed a concept wherein the chair and desk are no longer unquestionable starting points.’

People are becoming increasingly aware of the hazards of sitting, and soon employers will have to respond with new adaptive environments. For more on the shifting workplace, see our report on The Future Workplace.
