G-force: Restaurant merges art, technology and luxury

06 : 08 : 2014 Restaurant Tech : G9 Shanghai : Lane Crawford

Shanghai – G9 Shanghai, a new restaurant in the Lane Crawford luxury department store, is not a typical in-store eatery, but an upmarket dining space complete with an interactive light installation.

The space has an unusual shape for a restaurant. At 270 square metres it is long and narrow with triple-height ceilings. To fill the space, design firm Atelier INDJ created a light installation comprising 956 pendant lights and 9,200 metres of cable. At the end of the light is a grandiose art piece by British graffiti artist INSA. In the VIP area, which is elevated above other customers, diners are invited to interact with the light installation using a Kinect camera to change the speed and the brightness of the lights with simple hand gestures.

Alongside the light installation, another showpiece is the 22-metre brass banquet table in the centre, which will also double as a catwalk for Lane Crawford shows. The mixture of textures from concrete to brass, black marble and raw steel creates a luxurious atmosphere.
