US – The Green Building Council certification system, LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), has teamed up with design agency IDEO to create a digital dashboard that measures resources in real time.

A paper certificate is no longer enough. To ensure your company building is being as eco-efficient as possible, the LEED Dynamic Plaque is a digital screen that monitors the building and shows the results in real time. There are 15 buildings across the US with this plaque – and the organisation hopes to make it 1,000.

The designers tried to replicate a running track when displaying the amount of energy and resources used. A moving coloured band represents the five areas of concern: energy, waste, water, transportation and human experience. The current data can be compared with previous results and workers are encouraged to enter data that could give a more accurate picture of human experience. The aim of the project is to make a company’s resourcefulness understandable and to encourage people to continue to improve it.

The LEED screen is an example of how innovative digital technology can make information and data exciting, engaging and easier to use. For more on this, see our Innovate on how Britain’s Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments are being restored through clever design solutions.
