Digital craft: Hand-woven prints on modern furniture

New York – At New York Design Week, Kelly Behun Studio presented Neo Laminati, a collection of plastic laminate furniture inspired by an eclectic mix of 20th-century design movements.

The forms of the pieces in the collection were inspired by 1930s avant-garde design, 1960s op art and 1980s Memphis furniture. The designers added a contemporary touch with digitally printed plastic laminate panels.

Pieces included the Neo Maroc Chair and Neo Maroc Bench, which incorporated photos of hand-woven Moroccan rugs. Behun created the rugs in partnership with local craftspeople in Marrakech using found remnants of fabric. The designs add a warm hand-made touch to the furniture’s otherwise austere, linear design.

The Neo Laminati pieces were made by hand in the Naula Workshop in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
