Emoji style: Brands have fun with iconic designs

01 : 04 : 2014 Emojis : Gen D : New York

New York – Why say things with words when you can say them with an emoji? That is the premise behind the new line of emoticon-emblazoned loafers by handbag designer Edie Parker and shoe brand Del Toro for online retailer Moda Operandi.

Emoji – the little pictograms that have supplanted words as Generation D’s favourite way to communicate – adorn the collection of clutch bags and loafers. It is playful and kitsch, a knowing nod towards today’s youth culture that has permeated other areas of life.

Emoji may have begun as an easy way to add colour and tone to a text message, but they are quickly becoming a form of communication in their own right. The collaboration is a clever way of co-opting a cultural phenomenon.

For more on why brands should pay attention to emoji culture, read our US correspondent Shepherd Laughlin’s column, Emoji: The New Visual Communication Tool.
