Parallel lines: Designers explore Polish folklore

07 : 02 : 2014 Ewa Bochen : Maciej Jelski : Kosmos Project

Stockholm – Warsaw-based designers Ewa Bochen and Maciej Jelski of Kosmos Project are showing their Collective Unconscious collection in the Greenhouse area of Stockholm Furniture Fair.

Drawing references from ancient Slavic ceremonies, the duo have created a collection of textiles and furniture bearing motifs and symbols that evoke traditional local folklore. ‘Ancient Polish culture is very connected to changes in nature and the seasons,’ Jelski tells LS:N Global. ‘We have taken references from two contrasting ceremonies, the Kupala Night and the Dziady. One represents the civilised and the other the wild.’

Drawing parallels between ancient folklore and the modern day, the collection translates ancient symbols into a contemporary design language through hand-woven and hand-coloured textiles with bold graphics and rich natural pigments.

In these uncertain times designers are drawing on mythology and interpreting symbolism in a modern aesthetic, creating escapist narratives. For similar examples of Modern Mythology being integrated into design, see our design direction.

LS:N Global is reporting live from Stockholm Design Week. For more news, keep an eye on our Shows and Seed sections.
