New York – In his colourful, confident portraits of young Moroccan biker women, photographer Hassan Hajjaj sweeps away dusty stereotypes of Arab life.
His New York solo exhibition Kesh Angels captures women in bold print veils and djellabah, the Berber robes worn by men and women in North Africa. The young women pose playfully with their bikes, conveying a sense of spirited elegance. Hajjaj irreverently references old and new by surrounding each image with a hand-crafted wooden frame containing branded ephemera such as soda cans.
The images reveal a culture that is commercially vibrant while retaining ties with tradition. For more on how young Muslim women are exploring self-expression through fashion and style, read our Hijabistas microtrend.
