Round Rock, Texas – After listening to its customers, computer maker Dell has introduced bamboo in its computer packaging to replace excess plastic. The new compostable material is used as cushioning for its laptops and netbooks.
‘We previously used oil-based products such as styrofoam and polyethylene for cushioning, but our customers told us they were interested in smaller packaging and recycled or organic materials,’ says Oliver Campbell, Dell’s senior manager of packaging worldwide.
By 2012, Dell aims to reduce packaging volume by 10%, increase recycled content in packaging by 40% and increase the amount of packaging materials that are recyclable on the curbside to 75%. To survive in the future, brands must take a similar approach to that adopted by Dell.
